Peridot is a yellowish-green, olive green to deep green gemstone that is a form of the mineral olivine.

The word ‘Peridot’ originates from the Arabic word for gem ‘faridat’. Ancient Egyptians called it the ‘Gem of the Sun’ and mined it thousands of years ago on Zabargad, an island in the Red Sea.

Iron is usually the coloring agent for Peridot, and the gem is often found in basaltic volcanic rocks.

Significant sources of Peridot include Arizona, USA, China, Pakistan and Burma.

Some Peridot is truly ancient – it has been found in Pallasite meteorites which are remnants from the birth of our solar system.

Peridot is one of the birthstones for August and celebrates the 16 Anniversary.
